Founded in 1993, Playwrights First is dedicated to advancing the works of new playwrights. The group is comprised of 25 members, who range from corporate lawyers to teachers to actors and agents. Playwrights First solicits full plays that have yet to be produced. Over the years, there have been winners from Alaska and Australia. Each year, the winner receives a cash prize, and their play is given a reading at The Players Club, in Gramercy Park, New York, with a professional director and actors. In this manner, the play Wit was first discovered, and later went on to to full productions across the world, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1993.
